MusiGenesis
MusiGenesis is a program that lets people of any musical ability "grow" their own music. To create music, the user first chooses an instrument. MusiGenesis then begins adding random notes to the piece. The user keeps the notes she likes and deletes the ones she doesn't like. By adding multiple notes and multiple instruments, the user builds a complete piece of music. The key to MusiGenesis is that you don't need to know anything about music or rhythm to use it. All you need to know is what sounds good to you and what doesn't. The process is similar to evolution by natural selection: MusiGenesis produces musical "mutations," while the user plays the role of natural selection, deciding which mutations will survive and which will not. There are many programs out there that enable users with little or no knowledge of music to create their own musical compositions (ACID, FruityLoops and others). However, these programs work by providing the user with pre-recorded musical elements (usually called "loops") that they can mix-and-match to create full-length songs. While these programs are fun and often sound good, they don't give you the sense that you've created something completely by yourself. With MusiGenesis, you don't just remix other people's music. You actually create your entire song completely from scratch. You make the decisions about each and every instrument and note in the song. You can play your music for your friends and be able to proudly say "I made this." MusiGenesis incorporates its own built-in software synthesizer (which means that it does not use MIDI or DirectX to produce its sounds). This means that your compositions will sound exactly the same on any PC, and you will not require any special equipment to use the program. The MusiGenesis synthesizer is infinitely customizable with additional instruments (enhancing the hundreds of instruments that come with the program).
